AZ Alkmaar has officially signed defender Sam de Grand (21). The left-back joins from Lommel SK on a four-year deal until mid-2030, as announced on July 26, 2026.
What does this transfer mean for AZ Alkmaar?
De Grand's arrival strengthens AZ Alkmaar's defense after finishing sixth in the Eredivisie last season with 48 points (14W-6D-10L). The 21-year-old, who helped Lommel earn promotion to Belgium's top flight last season, fits well with AZ's attacking style.
"He fits perfectly into our playing philosophy," says technical director Niels van Duinen. "He is technically skilled, likes to attack, and can make a difference on the left flank."
Why did De Grand choose AZ Alkmaar?
For De Grand, the move to AZ Alkmaar is a crucial step in his development. "This is a great opportunity for me," he says. "My family lives in the region and they are big AZ supporters. That makes it extra special."
Born in Den Bosch but raised in Belgium, De Grand progressed through various youth academies. At AZ Alkmaar, he reunites with former youth coach Leeroy Echteld and goalkeeper Jari De Busser.
What's next for AZ Alkmaar?
AZ Alkmaar is preparing for the new season, which kicks off on January 31, 2027, with a home match against Feyenoord. The team aims to compete strongly in the Eredivisie with reinforcements like De Grand.
