Ajax attempted to bring former AZ Alkmaar winger Myron van Brederode back to the Eredivisie this summer. The Amsterdam club could not agree a transfer fee with his current employer KV Mechelen, however, causing the deal to collapse.
The capital club searched for weeks for a suitable replacement and Van Brederode was one of the concrete options. "With Ajax, it was concrete, but the clubs couldn't agree on the amount," the player told Het Gazet van Antwerpen. He added that the clubs that approached him were not willing to pay ten million euros, while KV Mechelen stuck to their asking price.
Ajax eventually found their new acquisition on deadline day. Simon Adingra arrived on loan from Sunderland, with an option to buy for sixteen million euros next summer. The Ivorian international knows Belgian football well from a previous loan spell at Union St. Gilloise.
For AZ Alkmaar, the news mainly confirms the quality the club previously had under contract. Van Brederode left permanently for Mechelen in 2025, following a loan stint at Fortuna Düsseldorf. The Cheeseheads currently sit second in the Eredivisie with sixteen points from six matches. The most recent match, a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, is still fresh in the memory. The full standings and upcoming fixtures can be found online. The next fixture is at home to Telstar on Sunday. AZ have made a strong start to the season, with recent form showing four wins and two losses in their last six league matches. Coach Pascal Jansen's side has scored fifteen goals in those six fixtures, averaging 2.5 per game.
